While soap, a balance of an oil and an alkali that cleanses, might seem like a tame subject, below are some strange or scary soap tidbits.
SCARY FOLKTALE: SOAP SALLY
This is a folktale I had not heard before, is chilling, although it was probably told to keep children from wandering off at night.
In the Appalachia Mountain area there is an old woman or man dressed as a woman that stalk the area a night looking for children and they are never seen again as she grinds them up to use in her special soap, sometimes into the shape of little hands. To add to the horror, she sells the products to their parents.

STRANGE - "A CHRISTMAS STORY" - I'LL WASH YOUR MOUTH OUT WITH SOAP"
Source: Still from a video of "A Christmas Story"
I doubt if you hear it these days, when I was a kid if we said a bad word, Mom would threaten to wash out with soap, but it wasn't until I watched "A Christmas Story" that I actually knew anything like it would actually happen. (It is an older movie, but if you have never seen it, recommend visiting your local video store in to see if they have it).

STRANGE SOAP STORY: SABOTAGED SOAP
When I was younger. long ago before massive quality control and licentious litigation, my Mom purchased a bar of Ivory Soap at our local grocery store and upon opening it found it was hammered full of little rusty nails hammered half way in on all sides of the soap in perfect symmetry. It sort of look like a "Pinhead" of Hellraiser in soap form.
Instead of contacting a lawyer, file a complaint with the company or taking back to the store to get a refund, it sat around for many years on her coffee table as a conversation piece. We sometimes would ponder its origin and reasoning behind it.

I like vintage and I love babies, this little of darling called "Smile and Cry"looks more like "Grimace and Scream". This is a vintage novelty children's soap on display at Victoria and Albert Museum.
